2 Dead, Several Feared Drowned in Pune Bridge Collapse Over Indrayani River
Pune, June 15, 2025 – A tragic incident unfolded in Kundmala, a popular monsoon tourist spot in Maval, Pune district, where a bridge built over the Indrayani River collapsed on Sunday, killing at least two people and leaving several others feared drowned.
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall and an active orange alert in the region. 32 people sustained injuries, with six of them in critical condition, according to officials.
Tourists Swept Away as Bridge Gives Way Amid Monsoon Surge
The bridge was crowded with tourists enjoying the lush green surroundings when it suddenly collapsed. Many people fell into the swollen Indrayani river, and several were swept away by the strong current. Locals described the moment as chaotic, with shouts for help and people struggling to stay afloat.
NDRF, Police Launch Large-Scale Rescue Operation
Rescue operations were launched immediately, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police reaching the site within hours.
“As some people have been swept away, a search is being carried out on a war footing. NDRF has been deployed at the spot. The relief work has been immediately accelerated,”
— Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, via a post in Marathi.
As of now, six people have been successfully rescued, while rescue teams continue to search the river for more victims.
Bridge’s Safety Under Question: Locals Raised Concerns
Local residents claimed they had raised repeated concerns about the structural safety of the bridge, which had undergone renovation 4-5 years ago. However, many tourists were unaware of the potential danger.
With Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad under orange alert, the recent torrential rains may have compromised the bridge’s foundation.
Monsoon Alert: Travel Advisory Issued for Tourists
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Pune’s ghat regions, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Tourists have been advised to avoid venturing into risky monsoon zones, especially areas close to rivers and waterfalls.
Investigation Ordered, CM Promises Action
Chief Minister Fadnavis assured that an in-depth investigation will be conducted into the incident, and accountability will be fixed if any negligence is found in the maintenance or safety checks of the bridge.
